Today, April 25th, representatives from the Michigan and National Main Street Center are conducting their last interview for our ‘Baseline Assessment’. Ten interviews involving over 60 people (representing the city, school, organizations, business and property owners, etc.) were conducted over this two-day period to review and assess the progress made toward establishing a strong local Main Street organization. This visit is designed to assist our community in determining the best strategies in organizing our Main Street Program. The results of the assessment will be shared with us today at noon.
The Michigan Main Street staff will be here again on Monday, May 7th at 7 PM for a Main Street information night. The meeting will be held at the Saline Middle School media center. Please join us to learn about the Main Street Four-Point Approach and all of the volunteer opportunities available. We will have information you can take home and applications available to be part of the Saline Main Street team. We will also share the results of the Baseline Assessment.

Anderson Vision, and Maura McCann – Youth of the Year, will be honored at our annual “Saline Salutes” gala for their volunteering efforts and more.

Over the past 10 months, we have been collecting names of people who were interested in learning more about the Main Street program wherever we made presentations or set up information booths at the Farmers Market and other events. Thank you to all of you who have shown interest! Now that we are a Selected Michigan Main Street community, it is time to get the program started.

Saline Main Street is accepting applications for the position of Main Street Manager. The Manager will be responsible for coordinating downtown revitalization activities through the Saline Main Street program.
Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree, Certification in Main Street Management and/or have professional experience in one or more of the following areas; volunteer management, nonprofit management, community/economic development, historic preservation, event planning , marketing, public relations, design, small business development, and retailing.
The Main Street Manager must be entrepreneurial, energetic, imaginative, well organized, be good with people, and capable of functioning effectively in an independent work environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. The Main Street Manager will promote public awareness of the program and act as liaison to other government and community organizations.
The salary range is in the low to mid-thirties plus benefits.

Come and join us! Representatives from the Michigan Main Street Center will be coming to Downtown Saline to make the official announcement of Saline’s designation into the Michigan Main Street Program.
The press conference will take place on Tuesday, March 20th at 7 PM at Mac’s Acadian Seafood Shack at 104 E. Michigan in Downtown Saline.
The community is invited to attend. Dessert will be provided by the Saline Main Street program.
Governor Rick Snyder announced that the community of Saline was selected to take part in the Michigan Main Street program on February 22, 2012. As a full-fledged Michigan Main Street community, Saline will receive five years of intensive technical assistance, through the Michigan Main Street program, with a focus on revitalization strategies designed to attract new residents, business investment, economic growth and job creation to their central business district.
The Michigan Main Street program is part of Governor Snyder’s placemaking efforts to create vibrant communities across Michigan. These efforts are based on numerous studies showing that investing in placemaking creates vibrant downtowns, making the state economically stronger. Saline is the 17th Select Level community in Michigan, and the first in Washtenaw County.
Last week we shared part of the first year services that the Michigan Main Street Center will provide now that we are designated as a Michigan Main Street community. The remainder of the services that will be provided in our first year will also include:
- Manager Training – This orientation will be for the new manager and includes an overview of the Main Street Four-Point Approach (R); explains the roles and responsibilities of staff, board and committees; offers strategies for the effective management of a local Main Street program; and addresses participants’ questions regarding Main Street program management.
- Main Street Building Basics- is an educational workshop to help Design Committee members, property and business owners and local citizens understand the basic principles behind historic preservation and design. The presentation serves as a kick-off point for the local Main Street program’s Design Committee.
- Design Services – In the first five years of the program, communities will receive design training and consultation services by the State Historic Preservation Office to help maintain and enhance the communities’ historic integrity. Each community will receive individualized design assistance for facade improvements of downtown buildings as part of the service. Up to three services will be provided per year for five years.
- Quarterly Trainings – The Quarterly trainings provide an excellent opportunity for local Main Street managers and volunteers to network with each other to discuss unique events, current challenges and successful solutions being developed in their community. The trainings are held in a different community each time, giving all participants a better understanding of each other’s downtowns.
- Year End Assessments – The purpose of these assessments is to determine the progress the local Main Street program is making in the fulfillment of its vision, mission and work plan.
- Committee Check-In – Michigan Main Street staff is available to attend committee meetings year around at the request of the Main Street Manager or Committee Chair. These regular meetings keep lines of community open.
- Michigan Main Street Listserv Opportunities – These resources are at our fingertips through the Listserve with other Michigan Main Street Listserv.
- Michigan Main Street Center Website – The Michigan Main Street Center & MSHDA is constantly looking for opportunities to put Michigan Main Street community and their accomplishments front and center. Photos, links and calendar information is regularly updated and promoted to a large audience interested in grassroots downtown development nationally.
- Volunteer Handbooks & Example Documents – By being named a Michigan Main Street Community, it puts us in a network of communities and gives us access to shared documents, resources and tutorials.
As you can see, we are fortunate to be Selected in the program! We are excited to build an organization that will focus on the improvement of our downtown for many years to come. It will take a lot of work from many volunteers. If being a part of improving, maintaining and enhancing our Downtown to be the best it can be interests you, please join us. We are forming Committees, looking for additional Board Members, and adding volunteers who just want to help with specific tasks. In a press release last week, Governor Rick Snyder announced that the community of Saline was selected by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) to take part in the Michigan Main Street program.
As a full-fledged Michigan Main Street community, Saline will receive five years of intensive technical assistance, through the Michigan Main Street program, with a focus on revitalization strategies designed to attract new residents, business investment, economic growth and job creation to their central business district.
“The Michigan Main Street program will help Saline create opportunities for redevelopment, placemaking and economic growth just as it has in downtowns throughout Michigan,” Governor Snyder said. “Vibrant communities and downtowns are critical as we look to help local businesses grow, attract new investment and retain and attract the talent that is needed to reinvent Michigan.”
So, what is next? The Michigan Main Street Center has given us a ‘To Do’ list of activities that we will be scheduling throughout our first year. The document is lengthy so we will split this into two blog posts.
- An Orientation on March 7 (All board members and volunteers) to go over the provided services and schedule for the year
- Manager Selection Service- Michigan Main Street staff will be available to assist with all aspects of the Main Street Manager selection process
- Community Announcement – Week of March 20th. This is an onsite press conference announcing Saline being named a Michigan Main Street community. All are welcome. Date and time will be announced soon.
- Base Line Assessment- is an evaluative service to introduce and explain the Main Street program to the community and to review and assess the progress the community made in establishing and developing the local Main Street program. This visit is designed to assist each community in determining the best strategies in organizing its Main Street program. National consultants will be here to assist in this Assessment.
- Board Training- Covers the board’s primary legal and programmatic responsibilities, individual responsibilities, function of staff and keys to creating and maintaining a healthy organization.
- Individual Committee Training – Works with members of all four committees/teams and covers committee roles and responsibilities; committee interaction with staff; and techniques for committee effectiveness, interaction, budgeting and project development
- Work Plan Development – Workshop design to assist Main Street committees/team to develop their work plans and learn the work planning process. The ‘Work Plan’ is intended to be an implementation document detailing specific goals, objectives, budgets and activities with benchmarks for measuring achievements. Each of the four committees is required to have a work plan.
This is only PART of the first year services! We will cover the rest of the services for the first year in the next blog.
As you can see, the training is going to be phenomenal and will help us build a sustainable and actionable organization to preserve and enhance our downtown core!

We are planning a ‘Main Street Mob’ night tonight at Dan’s Downtown Tavern in celebration of the Governor’s recent announcement that Saline has been accepted into the Michigan Main Street community. Come join in the fun if you can!
A formal Announcement Party will be scheduled in March by the Michigan Main Street Center…as soon as we confirm a date, we will share the news with you!

One of the greatest benefits of ‘Main Street’ is how it can bring people together for a common purpose… to build a better community. This was never more evident than it was at last week’s presentation to the Michigan Main Street Advisory Committee in Lansing. It was the final step in an almost 2-year journey to become a Select Level Michigan Main Street program.
In order to tell our story, fourteen volunteers brainstormed the night of our site visit on January 17th, and decided to show the Advisory Committee our community through partnerships that are possible if a Main Street program was in place. Our theme, “Parade of Partnerships”, came from ideas stemming from the great people and organizations in our community, and our love for our hometown parade!
Sticking with the ‘Route ’12 to Main Street’ theme, we decided on identifying 12 groups representative of our community that would help to tell our story. Each group was tasked with creating a ‘float’ utilizing some type of ‘vehicle’ like a wagon, and creating a puzzle piece that would also represent their group. They were asked to develop a 90 second speech to talk about their role in the community and how they believe Main Street could partner with their ‘group’ to benefit our community. Laurie Dawson created a large 7′ wide puzzle board that the puzzle pieces would be placed on after each group finished with their ‘speech’. As each group finished their presentation their puzzle piece would be added to the puzzle board. When all of the groups finished presenting, there would still be a very important ‘piece’ missing right in the center of the puzzle. The final piece would be passed through the crowd of volunteers and placed in the center of the puzzle to complete the puzzle. That piece was a picture of our Downtown with the Michigan Main Street logo. It represented our need for a full-time Downtown Revitalization organization utilizing the tools provided by the Michigan Main Street Center.
Over 62 members of our community, floats in tow and puzzle pieces ready, made the trip ! It was an amazing site to see !! Their ‘float’, puzzle piece and speeches were creative, interesting and full of pride for the role they play in our community. No matter what happens, it was a very memorable day for all of us and we each learned a little more about our community, our people, and the spirit of Main Street!
We will be informed of the committee’s decision by February 20th. If our community is selected into the Michigan Main Street program, Governor Snyder will make the announcement next week. Keep your fingers crossed!
